I really want these gorgeous pair of heels that are satin and have an open toe and a sling back. The shoes are amazing however, it is cold here and I wanted to make sure it was ok to wear tights with open toe shoes. Please let me know if this is ok! Thank you

    -Sara (December 10, 2008)

    Dear Sara,

We too feel your frostbite fears when wearing open-toed shoes in the winter. It is totally acceptable to wear tights with open-toed shoes. When wearing nude or sheer nylons make sure they are sandal toe/foot (they have no seam or color difference from the rest of the stocking). But for a more fashion forward look, pair your open-toed shoes with a pair of black opaque tights.

The look we are totally rocking this winter is opaque tights with open-toed platform sandals. Not only will you avoid wet or frostbitten toes but you will look just like you stepped off the Sonia Rykiel Fall 2008 runway!

Should black be worn at a wedding? Should the mother of the bride wear black?

    -Ginny (December 9, 2008)

    Dear Ginny,

Black is an acceptable color to wear to a wedding. A black dress can be worn to an evening or black-tie wedding. But when the wedding takes place out of the traditional spring/ summer wedding season, black becomes a viable option as stores are often out of stock of brightly colored frocks during this time.

However, if you are the mother of the bride, we would suggest you opt for a different color, especially to avoid the funeral connotations. Perhaps you could select a dress from the same color family as the bridesmaids or overall wedding color scheme. For example if the color scheme includes a cranberry red, you could select a dress in a burgundy or wine shade of red. This way you create a cohesive look to your daughter’s big day.

I would like to know if polka dots are currently in???

    -Susan (December 8, 2008)

    Dear Susan,

Polka-dots have resurfaced recently on the Spring 2009 runways and already celebrities and retailers have been spotted sporting this pattern. Michael Kors’ upbeat 60’s-inspired spring collection featured polka-dot dresses, skirts and hats. Retailers like H&M featured a bevy of polka-dot garments in November's Comme Des Garçons collection. Many fashionable celebrities have been spotted around town in speckled attire, including Katie Holmes.

The best way to wear this dotted trend is to play down the rest of your outfit and let the polka-dot piece make the statement.

Can I wear a strapless dress to a club in the middle of December? Will I look nuts? I wore a dress with sleeves last time and although it was short I felt a little matronly.

    -Veronica (December 3, 2008)

    Dear Veronica,

Cold weather always puts a bit of a damper on our nighttime attire, especially since we can’t stand waiting in line for coat check! But we know we’ll freeze our tushies off during the short dash from the cab to the club door if we don’t dress appropriately. However, once you’re inside the club, you’ll probably be dancing up a storm and thus a strapless or sleeveless dress will be more comfortable (as in, you’ll sweat less) and more appropriate (as in, bye bye matron!).

For those readers who need the comfort of cover up in order to feel more free on the dance floor, we suggest topping your strapless look with a bolero, cardigan or boyfriend blazer. These topers will give your outfit a unique look as well as keep your confidence up, until you’ve gained enough liquid courage to toss the topper in a dark corner somewhere!
