I'm going to be wearing a bronze colored tube dress. What shoes should I wear with that? Should I wear boots or regular heels? What do you think?

    -Lepaula (January 4, 2009)

    Dear Lepaula,

Shoes can sometimes make or break an outfit so selecting that perfect pair can be challenging. From the description of your dress, we would suggest a heel over a boot. Black is always a safe color option when playing with metallics. Sheen is also something to be aware of with metallics as you don’t want to look like a disco ball, light reflecting everywhere.

Our suggestion would to select a black, matte thick strap high heel platform sandal, it will be a shoe that can carry you through spring as the runways were full of platformed sandals. Feel free to play around with metallic hardware, we especially like the Mellisa sandals $109.95 at Steve Madden. Adding black opaque tights will also give you a more modern look.

Are baggy pants back in style this year?

    -Nikka (January 3, 2009)

    Dear Nikka,

Pants of all volume are en vogue for spring, including wide leg, pleated front, Jodhpur, straight leg and skinny. Baggy pants of the 1990’s have been refined with a higher and defined waist, not the undie displaying versions à la Tommy Hilfiger. Harem or Jodhpur pants have lots of volume but still give a defined silhouette. When playing with volume on the bottom make sure to balance out the proportions on top with a slim, more body conscious top, to avoid looking like a balloon.

My question is that I bought a pair of black jeans but in the store they just looked like very dark denim and now I'm not sure what matches or looks good with black jeans? I guess I should add that I wear a lot of black tops and don’t know if black tops and black jeans can go together? HELP!

    -Stephanie (January 3, 2009)

    Dear Stephanie,

Lucky for you black is always in and one of the easiest colors to match with, so don’t fret about your purchase. Black and black do work well together but to avoid looking like a complete beatnik, layer your black jeans with black tops of different textures and fabrics, like leather, knit, silks, satins or sheers. If you already own a lot of black, this should be easy enough to find in your closet. An easy way to play with color in a black on black ensemble is to use accessories in your color accents. We love an all black ensemble with a bright colored pump, like a shockingly bright magenta pump.

A pop of color on top is also a no brainer with black pants. White is a classic and elegant combination, especially a crisp collared shirt. But to really give your outfit some color, you could try any of the jewel tones, which were huge in Fall 2008, like purple, sapphire and garnet. Black pants should be a staple in every woman’s wardrobe, even if you bought them by mistake.

I have a simple black dress about above knee length. It's very simple. How can I make it more glamorous? What accessories should I use?

    -Nikki (December 18, 2008)

    Dear Nikki,

We love simple black dresses, as they are the easiest to dress up and create totally different looks each time you wear them. With a LBD anything goes from brightly colored accessories to the muted palette of black on black. To make your frock more glamorous, gems and jewels are the way to go; obviously opt for the costume variety! What outfit doesn’t look good with a bit of bling?!

Other ideas for different LBD looks include belting it at the waist; wearing a long blazer; wear a colored cardigan; flats vs. pumps; patterned tights (not fish nets); pairing it with booties are some ideas just to get you started so have fun and be creative.
