Hi! First off...LOVE YOU! A quick question: it is currently the month of January, so the middle of the winter. Going along with the whole "don't wear white after Labor Day", can you wear a white dress after Labor Day? The outfit would be a white dress with black buttons, wearing with it a black belt, black tights and black pumps. Is this okay?

Dear Kim,
Many people in the fashion world are questioning and challenging the old custom of abondaning white after Labr Day, especially since the custom is rooted in nothing more than popular fashion etiquette. After doing some research as to the origins of this fashion taboo, there is no clear pinpoint answer or reason; however the etiquette originally stated that white shoes were the taboo while white or “winter white” clothes were acceptable.
Since the “rule” of not wearing white after Labor Day has no specific reason, the fashion industry has been pushing the boundary of white. This past fall runway season designers like John Galliano, Chloé, Sonia Rykiel, Celine, Giambattista Valli, Costume National and Emanuel Ungaro all featured white day dresses in their collections. So if you are comfortable pushing the social and fashion norms, go ahead and wear your white and black accented outfit!

I just stand 5'1 and I'm super skinny. I don't know what to wear on ordinary days like going to school or going out. What specifically? Skinny? Bootcut? Shorts? Skirts?

Dear Nikki,
Since your frame is so slight you have to be careful not to overwhelm your body when choosing clothes. You should try to find items that are shorter in length, narrow in width and lack distractions for the eye (pockets, cuffs and pleats). Keeping those descriptions in mind when shopping could help you select clothing that would best fit your body and give you the appearance of the longest body possible.
Jeans can be overwhelming with all the different styles, colors and washes, but for your height and build, we would suggest a skinny or straight leg style of jean with a mid to high waist would be perfect for you. For skirts, we would suggest short skirts that are fitted or fall straight from the hip; you could even try wearing a high-waisted skirt, which will make your legs look longer. In selecting a pair of shorts we would suggest, one with a higher waist, that does not have pleats or cuffs and that are short. Please stay away from Bermuda’s, Capri’s, clam diggers and petal pushers, they will make your legs look much shorter.

I am going to an office environment where everyone wears denim for most occasions. How can I mix it up?

Dear Trina,
Lucky you, moving to an office environment where denim is acceptable! The variations are endless but we’ll get you started by giving you some ideas. A classic way of wearing denim in an office environment is with a button-up blouse; mix this look up by tucking in the blouse and wearing a belt or try different styles of blouses: bow front, pin-tuck bib style, sheer blouses with a cami underneath, patterned blouses, etc.. Knitwear is also great to pair with denim: cardigans, turtlenecks, tees with seaming details. Play with different sleeve lengths: ¾ length, short sleeve knitwear, and rolled up cuffs. Shoes and accessories can help mix it up so play with the texture, color and pattern of your shoes and don’t be concerned with matching everything. Layering is also a great way to mix it up and add some dimension to your outfits. Or try an oversized blazer and basic tee for a more fashion-forward look.

I want to buy these moccasins but I don’t know how much longer they'll be in...what do I do?
- Laurel (January 8, 2009)

Dear Laurel,
The moccasin trend (most notably started by Kate Moss way back in 2004) is definitely still lingering, especially now since fringe has made its mark on the spring runways (see Hermes Spring 2009 Western Look). The Wild West look would not be complete without the moccasin. We think moccasin boots will be around a little longer, so feel free to purchase some mocs, the trend is far from over!
