Hey! I just wanted ask how I can better get into the latest fashion by just using my old stuff and clothes.

    -Syril (January 31, 2009)

    Dear Syril,

Although fashion trends change season to season, most often they don't change radically enough that you need to buy an entirely new wardrobe every 6 months . So it's likely that you already own something from a previous season that could very well be ‘in’ this season. A trick we like to use whenever a new season is upon us is to take inventory of our closet. We take a look at what we already own so when we're watching TV, reading a magazine, or walking down the street and we see something we like, we can immediately say “I have something like that!”. That way you can mix what you already own in a new way by drawing inspiration from the runways or a woman on the street.

Another trick of the trade is to modify something you already own. A transformation of an article of clothing can make it look totally brand new as well as creating that "one of a kind" look. For example, replace the brown buttons on your trench coat with large mother of pearl ones for an updated safari look. Or wear 3 of your favorite bangles at the same time to create your very own statement jewelry without spending a dime. Or cut some holes into last season's denim for your own pair of worn in, boyfriend jeans.

I am attending a winter wedding at a ski resort (black tie optional). I am wearing a black satin knee length dress with black closed toe pumps. Should I wear hose? If so, what color?

    -Brenda (January 29, 2009)

    Dear Brenda,

There are no longer set rules about wearing hosiery. It all depends on personal comfort and choice. For example Michelle Obama choose not to wear hose for many of the inauguration events despite the cold temperatures.

If you do choose to wear hose, we would suggest wearing nude or flesh tone nylons, a close match to your skin tone to create a natural look, leaving the emphasis on your dress.

Here's my dilemma. I'm 34 years old and a mother of two and I have a pouch, what used to be a nice sexy belly BEFORE kids. I've gained weight and I'm 5'8. I try to keep up with fashion but can't find that look to make me look slim. I'm in the process I've losing weight but it takes time. But in the mean time what do you suggest that I do?

    -Sherley (January 22, 2009)

Motherhood can be a very rewarding experience, just not necessarily for your body image. There is a denim company called Not Your Daughter's Jeans that aims to address the number one body image concern for women (especially mothers): the belly. This brand of jeans addresses problem areas that women across all body types, ages and ethnicities have. They slim the often problematic lower abdomen, contour the hips and lift the butt without the feeling of being stuffed in binding, tight and uncomfortable material. So say goodbye to love handles that spill over restricting waistlines and derriere-revealing low riders.

These jeans could be exactly what you are looking for to give you some extra confidence while you work to slim down and they come in a variety of styles and sizes including plus-size. They are available at a variety of retailers including Nordstrom iconand retail for less than $150.

I’m 18 years old and have little body confidence. I haven't worn a dress or skirt in years and I would love to find one that I feel good in and that suits my body. I’m size 16 and a 38 D, with large thighs and fat stomach, average size hips and waist, what kind of dress or skirt would suit me?

    -Lottie (January 11, 2009)

    Dear Lottie,

Finding the right style of dress or skirt can really elevate your spirits and give you a boost of self-confidence. From the description of your body, we would classify your body shape as ‘O’ or Apple. An ‘O’ body shape typically has fuller breasts and broad shoulders and arms; the widest point of the body is the midsection and is narrower in the hips and thighs.

There are many things to consider when dressing any body, but we’ve included some key points to consider when dress/ skirt shopping such as, hemline, neckline, sleeve length, color and pattern. The best hemline for an ‘O’ shape is an A-line skirt. It will flatter your shape by creating a defined waist and hourglass shape. The necklines best suited for the ‘O’ body is V-necks and U-necks, or any open neckline, square and boat necks are also an option. Less fabric and more skin close to your face will make your face the focal point of the outfit, drawing the eye up and away from some of the problem areas, creating a slimming illusion. Color can also create an illusion of a slimmer body, especially dark, solid colors as they will help to diffuse a thick midsection. Look for a dress that has cap or bell sleeves as they can camouflage a bulky upper arm.

Dresses and skirts are very flattering no matter what your body shape, so don’t be timid in trying them on, they are often more flattering than pants for women and are also the ultimate definition of feminine!
