Hi. I am 26 years old and sometimes I feel like I’m not dressing my age or I feel like it’s too plain. I want to dress with style and more my age. But I also don't have a lot of money just to spend on my wardrobe. So if u can give me advice, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    -Katrina (February 15, 2009)

    Dear Katrina,

Age appropriate dressing is sometimes a skill hard to master, judging by the volume of TV shows that aim to address it, What Not to Wear, for one. But when you're budget conscious, it an seem like an even harder task, because no one is throwing you a VISA card loaded with $5000 to spend on your wardrobe! But with your age, we’d suggest you try to have fun with your clothes, it is a time in your life when you can explore your personal style, like who hasn’t seen a picture of their 20-year-old mom and thought, "what was she thinking?"

To be stylishly age appropriate yet budget conscious we suggest you invest in a few key pieces that you feel truly represent your style and might be on the trendier side of the fashion spectrum, like a geometric bib necklace, x-strap platform sandals or a military style jacket. Stock up on basics (pencil skirts, t-shirts, blouses, cardigans, jeans, and trousers) in neutral shades (black, brown, camel and white). Then you can mix and match your basics with your trendier pieces to define your outfit. But a word to the wise, try not to wear all your investment pieces all at the same times or else in thirty years, you’ll be getting the "what was she thinking?" from your own daughter!

I would like to know this spring must have item that’s easy to mix and match with jeans.

    -Kiana (February 9, 2009)

    Dear Kiana,

It would be very hard for us to pin down just one must have item for spring, especially to pair with jeans, because this season there are a variety of items that are perfect to mix and match with jeans. For starters there is the hugely popular Boyfriend Blazer, which pairs perfectly with jeans, or a skirt, or even a dress. For that matter, any blazer or jacket featured on the runways (military, anorak, fitted, or oversized) will do. Shoes are also a great way to dress up or down jeans and this season, your go-to pair are platform sandals.

This season’s emphasis on statement jewellery also works well with jeans, whether it be your fave statement necklace from last season, or your latest obsession with statement earrings, these statement accessories are perfect to pair with jeans. Jeans are one of the most versatile articles of clothing. For spring our picks to pair with our fave skinny dark wash denim would be a boyfriend blazer, platform sandals and statement earrings. We think we just found our go-to spring look!

Hi, I was just wondering if you could help me with some styling. I live in a cold climate and often wear hoodies to try to stay warm. I do not like being cold and in the colder months I prefer to be comfortable. I often wear a fitted hoodie with jewellery but would like to look more fashionable. Could you help?

    -Erin (February 2, 2009)

    Dear Erin,

We appreciate that you are smart about the cold weather, preferring to be warm and comfortable rather than freeze for fashion. We think however that there is definitely a more fashionable way to stay warm than with a hoodie! Although we are gearing up for spring, we’ll keep the current temp in mind to help you become a stylish winter survivor.

After many deep freezes, we’ve heavily relied on layering to keep us warm through those long winter months. By using layers, you can create your own climate control, adding or removing layers depending on the temp. It can sometimes be tricky to master, as one can look bulky if not done right.

You should start with a thin base like a cami and build up to your heavier layers, like cardigans, sweaters or turtlenecks. Cardigans are a perfect item to help you survive winter, as they are quintessentially perfect for layering without adding bulk and they tend to come in a variety of textures and materials. Add a thin merino wool one for those days just above the freezing mark and for those days when you think your nose will freeze off seconds after exposure try a thicker wool one. Being smart about staying warm in the winter is important but that is no reason why you can’t look stylish at the same time.

Help, I've got big feet! And I'm looking for cute, non-expensive SIZE TWELVE high heels. Where could I find a pair?

    -Nicole (January 26, 2009)

    Dear Nicole,

Oh how we feel your pain, ourselves suffering the horrors that is shoe shopping for any size larger than a 9. We learned early on to shoe shop at the beginning of each season to ensure we’d find a shoe we liked in a size big enough. While our size 11 was difficult enough, we can only imagine your sufferings.

However, there is good news, not only do we find that more shoe stores are carrying more pairs of larger sizes but big feet has become quite the niche market. So luckily for us, we now have more options than the Tall Girl Outlet Store. Some online stores that carry and specialize in larger sizes are Divna.ca and Torrid.com. It still is hard to find stylish or trendy shoes for larger feet but these two retailers offer a pretty good selection and at reasonable prices.
