Hi, I'm a new buyer for girls/ teens wear in a department store. My co-worker and
I (who's the buyer for ladies wear) are always having problems with regards to buying our items. The last time we went on a buying trip together, I had difficulties buying my items because she was always telling me that the items that I'm choosing are for ladies, even though they are clearly for girls/ teens. She only looks at the size to judge if it's for girls/ teens or ladies. She also says that all silk, linen and plaid materials fall under ladies wear.
For me ladies wear is more about showing the elegant and feminine outlook of a woman, and not just defined by the size of the item. Can you help me to differentiate between girls/ teens wear and ladies wear? Thank you.

Dear Jen,
We are happy that you turned to Stylehog.com to settle your debate with your co-worker! We have to say we agree with your definition of ladies wear. It is not just about what the size an item, but that the garment reflects the elegance and sophisticated outlook of a woman. We also have to disagree with your co-worker when it comes to eliminating fabrics out of girls/ teens wear. This past fall we saw a lot of plaid, especially in the girls/ teens sections of stores. Girls/ teens wear should be youthful and fun, which could include items in linen, silk and/ or plaid fabrics. So stick to your guns and we’re sure the girls/ teen department will have the highest sell-through of the store!

I’ve noticed on a few talkshow women (i.e. Tyra Banks) wearing these beaded necklaces with fabric or ribbon going through it. Where can I find these in an assortment of colour and styles?

Dear Heidi,
Thank god for Lanvin and their ribbon threaded necklaces. We absolutely love them but unfortunately don’t have $1,500 to drop on the couture creation. The gods must be smiling on us as we found an assortment of fabric-beaded necklaces at a variety of reasonably priced retailers. Banana Republic has a great one for $54 in tan, perfect for the nude trend for Spring 2009. J. Crew has ribbon laced necklaces in a variety of colors for $55. Kohl’s has a dressier ribbon necklace for $18.20, perfect for a night out while Anthropologie has a wide variety of ribbon beaded necklaces. We may not be able to afford the original Lanvin ribbon-beaded necklace but any one of the necklaces mentioned above are perfect for the budget fashionista.

I have a party coming up and I want to look great but bang on trend. Any suggestions??

Dear Aly,
A party look we love for spring is the menswear blazer over a short cocktail dress, like what Stella McCartney sent down the runway in her Spring 2009 collection. We love the play on proportions and mixing menswear staples such as a blazer with an ultra feminine strapless cocktail dress. While this combo from Stella's collection will run you $4,650.00 at Neiman Marcus , we’ve found some budget friendly options to recreate Stella’s look, perfect for your upcoming party.
We found a white boyfriend blazer at American Eagle for $59.50 that would look perfect paired over a short dress you already own. Or if you are looking for a completely new outfit, we like this Sunset Dress from Urban Outfitters for $58.00. Either paired with opaque black tights or a nude leg, be sure to finish this look off with a pair of killer heels. In an outfit like this, all eyes will be on you when you enter the room!

First, I absolutely adore and appreciate this fashion site. I also adore knee high gladiator sandals. I was not able to take advantage of this trend last spring or summer. My question to you is whether or not the gladiator sandal will make a comeback this spring/summer 2009? Or have I missed this trend opportunity for good?

Dear Aiysha,
As much as we loved the knee- high gladiator sandals that were very trendy last summer, they will not be as on trend this summer. Although you will still see them in stores this season, we think they will be part of the second wave of the trend cycle where the item is targeted towards the masses versus the niche market of fashion watchers. This cycle of fashion is explained so eloquently by Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Presley to Anne Hathaway’s character in The Devil Wears Prada.
Luckily the gladiator sandal has not totally disappeared from the fashion radar for spring/summer 2009 and instead flat ankle gladiator sandals are still en vogue. Also the platform gladiator sandal will be all the rage this season. So if you are comfortable being just a bit behind the crest of the trend, then by all means gets a pair of knee-high gladiator sandals but if you want to catch the latest wave we suggest you purchase a pair of platform gladiator sandals.
