Can a 4 inch high heel shoe be cut down to 3 1/4 inches

-Sharron (July 14, 2009)

Dear Sharron,

Yes in fact you can cut down a high heel to a shorter height, but it must be done by a professional shoe cobbler. There is a lot of work that goes into cutting down a heel and it isn't as simple as cutting off a chunk of the heel, hence the need for a professional. Because the sole of the shoe is angled in line with the heel height, a shoe cobbler would need to re-angle the sole to match the new height. That involves re-soling the shoe and much more labor, therefore be prepared to pay a pretty penny for the work. Also, the cobbler may only be able to cut down the heel to a certain height. Since you are looking to cut off 3/4 of an inch, you may have more trouble. We've been told half an inch is the max, but it's worth asking your cobbler if he can do more.

Where are some good places to shop? I'm 16 and I like differant clothes, not like what EVERYONE is wearing, something a little like Miley Cyrus' style? thankkkkks

-Danielle (July 1, 2009)

Dear Danielle,

If you like Miley Cyrus, did you know she is collaborating with Max Azria (from BCBG) on a line of clothing for Wal-Mart.. It is sure to represent her style at an affordable price and will definitely be worth checking out. As for shopping suggestions that will help you to create a unique outfit we are a firm believer that it is not necessarily where you shop but how you put the outfit together that makes it different and personal. Try pairing basic pieces from shops like H&M, Club Monaco, American Apparel and Urban Outfitters with vintage or designer pieces and accessories. Places like Value Village, Kensington Market or even your grandmother's closet are the perfect places to hunt for remarkable treasures that won't be seen on every other girl walking down the street!

I'm really short Asian (about 150 cm, or 4'10.5"). I think I might be triangular shaped, but I'm not sure. I'm short, but big boned and relatively thin. In my opinion, my shoulders are quite broad, my chest is large for my size (34C).I think my hips are narrower than my shoulders. I'm just still trying to find clothes that will fit right. Anyways, it's so hard to find jeans that will fit me properly!! It will either fit me at the waist and be way too tight around my hips and thighs, or it will be too loose around the waste and fit me ok around the hips/thighs. Dresses are usually the same; they'll fit me from the waist down, but then be too too tight from the around the mid back to the top! The real problem is this: I'm at a loss of what type of clothes with flatter my body type. I would really really appreciate ANY advice you can give!! I must seem like a hopeless case.

-Elenor (July 1, 2009)

Dear Elenor,

Please don't think of yourself as a hopeless case! There are many people in a similar predicament as yourself and there are always ways to revamp your wardrobe and add a fashionable flare to your classic style.

Let's begin with your shape. It sounds like you are an inverted triangle or V shaped body (broader shoulders and chest and slimmer hips). If so you'll want to accentuate your lower half and draw attention to your narrow hips. Stick with light, flowing fabrics (like a soft cotton jersey) and stay away from styles that accentuate your shoulders. Try graphic or floral print skirts paired with solid coloured t-shirts. Since you are petite it would be best to try skirts that cut above or just below the knee. Long skirts can stunt the body and make you appear even shorter. A-line, full or tulip shaped skirts are your best bet while shirts with 3/4 length sleeves, scoop necks and V-necks will help draw attention away from the broader part of your body. Avoid high necked, strapless, and sleeveless tops. Jeans that are slightly flared or boot cut will flatter your body type. The current slim and tapered pant trend is not for you but don't worry because looking good never goes out of style. Trying to find a decent pair of jeans for under $20 is going to be a bit difficult. Try places like Levi's, Buffalo, Jean Machine and H&M, who carry a wide range of styles at affordable prices. A good seamstress or tailor can be your best friend. We would suggest that you buy pants that fit you well in the hips and thighs but may be a little loose in the waist. Since you have to get them hemmed anyways, when you take the pants to the seamstress/tailor ask them to take in the waist as well. It might be a bit expensive ($10-$15 for original bottom hems and $15-$20 to take in the waist) but it is a lot cheaper than buying custom-made clothing!

As for your wardrobe, just because the majority of your clothes are older doesn't mean that they aren't still fashionable. If we bought a whole new wardrobe every year we would be broke! When building a wardrobe it is important to buy quality pieces that will stand the test of time, but if you get bored with your rotation of outfits we have a mantra for you: accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Shoes, handbags, scarves, hats, belts and jewelry can help to liven up the saddest of outfits and the best part about it is that they can look good on any body type. Just keep in mind that when it comes to accessories it is possible to have too much of a good thing so don't wear a sparkly cocktail ring with a hat, chandelier earrings, giant stacked bangles and a statement necklace all at once. Less is more so try pairing a basic black outfit (you did say you owned a lot of black) with a pair of killer heels, a black handbag, a low-slung belt and a futuristic cuff. Below we have put together a look that we think might look good on you. It incorporates all of our suggestions above AND it won't break your bank!

- Skirt: Muted satin floral skirt by Charlotte Russe ($22.99)

-Top: Tight v-neck t-shirt in grey by American Apparel ($25.00)

-Shoes: Blush colored lace-up sandals by Opening Ceremony ($243)

Or for some height try these nude pumps by Jessica Simpson ($78.95)

-Jewelry: try a piece of costume jewelry like a bold cuff or shiny cocktail ring

Do you know where I can find an affordable bandage dress? I would like to wear it for my birthday. Also would it flatter my short petite form. Thank you so much!

-Cynthia (June 22, 2009)

Dear Cynthia,

Bandage dresses are universally flattering (meaning they look good on almost everyone). Buying an original Herve Leger bandage dress can put a serious dent in your wallet but there are other, inexpensive options. The only drawback to these imitators is the lack of variety, in terms of cut and colour, but as long as it fits like a glove and hugs your curves in all the right places the following bandage dresses are a steal.

- Marciano bandage dress in a variety of colors ($98 - $148)

- Urban Outfitters bandage dress in black($58)

- Charlotte Russe knit bandage dress in blue or black ($26.99)
