Is it OK to wear tights with peep toe pumps in the fall/winter with a dress or skirt?

-Valisa (Nov 3, 2009)

Dear Valisa,

Wearing tights during the cold fall and winter months under a dress or skirt is perfectly acceptable - actually we shudder to think about what braving weather as cold as -25ºC (and lower) would feel like without them. Wearing tights with peep toe pumps is also definitely acceptable.

Hi! I'm just wondering some of the best ways to wear ankle boots. I'm about 5'6" and I don't want to make myself seem really short. I like the way they look with shorts, skirts, dresses, leggings and jeans but I don't find it's always easy to make it work. What is a good length/color ankle boot to wear when you are showing leg and what is a good length for with skinny jeans? And, how can you make your skinny jeans tuck smoothly into an ankle boot without looking too messy? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Dear Hilary,

At 5'3" we have a difficult time wearing flat ankle boots without shortening our stature so we definitely understand your dilemma! Ankle boots are that in-between length that aren't always easy to just slip on and look fabulous but the challenge they present is part of the reason they are so much fun to wear. Always wear ankle length boots with slim jeans, leggings, skirts, dresses or shorts (you could wear them with tapered pleated pants but this is a risky venture and not for the stout legged or the faint of fashion-heart!)

Our favorite way to wear ankle boots is a slouchy, western-style, motorcycle-inspired ankle boot in black or dark brown. The more scuffed up, worn in and dirty the boot the better looking it is. If you don't want your slim jeans to look "messy" buy a pair of cigarette style pants. These slim pants should stop just above the ankle so when you tuck you feet into your ankle boots there shouldn't be any extra wrinkling. Otherwise a few extra wrinkles in your jeans that peak over the edge of your ankle boots should look fine especially if you are going for that casual, just threw on whatever and left the house look.

What style boot do I wear with a knee length skirt?

-Marlene (Oct 21, 2009)

Dear Marlene,

If you're going to wear a pair of boots with a knee length skirt we'd suggest wearing a pair of booties with a heel.. A pair of booties will elongate your look and show off your stems. You can find our top ten favorite booties for the winter here.

Alternatively, you can wear a pair of knee high boots as well so long as they are high heeled and are streamlined (i.e. no buckles, studs or chunky zippers).
