Hello! So I just recently got a job working for a clothing store in Toronto (and an excuse to go shopping!). The store is really strict when it comes to dress code...meaning they want all associates to be dressed in their apparel. Before this job I haven't really shopped much at this particular store because the items were kind of pricey for my budget. So I'm pretty much starting from scratch... I just wanted to know if you could give me sort of a 'guideline' on which type of items to buy first or which ones are the more important pieces for me to be able to mix and match outfits for work. Its also getting cold here so I would need pieces that are suited for the fall/winter season. Thank you so much for your help!

-Grace (Nov 9, 2009)

Dear Grace,

Congratulations on your new job! If you're working in retail and you're looking to build a wardrobe with essential pieces that you can mix and match and also wear 3-5 times a week we recommend a lot of solid, classic pieces such as:

- a black blazer
- a pair of black slim pants
- a grey menswear inspired cardigan
- a fitted white blouse that you can tuck in and out
- a bold colored top in a silky material
- a black or tweed pencil skirt

Since you have to outfit yourself completely in clothing from one retailer you'll also want a few pieces that you can play with, they aren't essential but they'll liven up your outfit. Try things like:

- an animal print sweater
- fun statement jewelry (necklaces, layered bangles, cocktail rings)
- a flirty dress that can be worn under a caridgan or blazer

I just purchased a pair of leather skinny pants but I'm wondering what kind of top I should wear with them and also if it's ok to wear them for a casual look

-Nadia (Nov 9, 2009)

Dear Nadia,

It's definitely ok to wear slim leather pants with a casual look but we definitely recommend pairing tight leather pants with heels. If you're going for a casual look and really want to wear flats we recommend the rock n roll look. Slip the pants (and your feet) into a pair of slouchy, motorcycle-inspired boots but no sneakers!

As for tops, any top will do. If you want a casual look try a classic t-shirt and wear it loose and untucked.

I am attending a weding and just purchased a beautiful ink color dress, not sure what color shoes to wear. Thank you gor your help.

-Priscilla (Nov 7, 2009)

Dear Priscilla,

An ink colored dress would go nicely with a pair of taupe or grey shoes. Shoes with a metallic sheen might also work well. Since you are going to a wedding a pump or something a little more dressy would probably be best.

If your dress is fairly minimalist and classic spice it up with some sparkle like these J. Crew Crystal kaleidoscope slingbacks.

If you want something a little simpler, try these Dolce Vita April pumps.

If you're looking for something in between a classic pump but with a little bit of feminine detail, try these Seychelles Reservations for Two heels.

Are UGGs in or out?

-Lizzie (Nov 7, 2009)

Dear Lizzie,

We have long pondered the fashion accessory that is the UGG and genuinely thank you for this opportunity to share with you and our readers our thoughts.

UGGs, in their classic incarnation, are slippers. Slippers with rubber soles but slippers none the less and should be worn as such. Think about them as the shoe equivalent to pajamas. In a pinch, when you're feeling lazy, tired or just couldn't be bothered to care you (i.e. you've stayed up all night studying for an exam; your dog ate your motorcycle boots; in a drunken stupor you used your ballet flats as a sick basin) you can slip outside to run an errand or visit a friend in them but do not be fooled; chic and fashionable accessory they are not.

One disturbing trend we have been seeing a lot is people wearing their sheepskin UGGs as all-weather winter boots. Wet, dirty, salt-stained UGGs are fug. Would you continue to wear your slippers if you drowned them in a wet, muddy puddle? We think not.
