Scrimp, Spend or Splurge – The Peplum Dress for Fall 2010

Celebrity,Scrimp Spend Splurge September 8, 2010 @ 8:35 am

You may have noticed that we have quite an obsession with ladylike fashions for Fall 2010 and so it seems do some of our favorite celebrities.  Their ladylike dress of choice – the peplum dress (i.e. a dress with a short overskirt or ruffle attached to its waistline).  Rachel Bilson showed her love for the feminine silhouette in a Peter Som peplum number from his Fall 2010 collection.  Demi Moore went for classic black in a peplum dress by Lanvin at the annual A Night at Sardi’s gala.  And we applaud Reese Witherspoon’s choice to wear a cobalt blue peplum dress by Jason Wu to the Vital Voices 2010 Global Leadership Awards in Washington.   Click through to check out our picks for peplum dresses for fall.  We’ve found one for every budget and for every sleeve style.

Scrimp, Spend, Splurge – Animal Accents for Fall 2010

Celebrity,Scrimp Spend Splurge August 5, 2010 @ 12:52 pm

We have a love-hate relationship with animal print accessories.  When done right, a carefully placed leopard print accessory can take an outfit from so-so to out of this world.  When done wrong, an animal accent can turn a perfectly respectable outfit into one hot mess.  Thankfully our three celebrity inspirations have used leopard print accessories the right way – as perfect additions to their fairly tame outfits.  We love how Alexa Chung upped the ante on her denim cut-off/basic blouse combination with a chic leopard print bucket bag at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.  Diane Kruger’s decision to pair a simple black ensemble with a pair of leopard print shoe booties at a London Hugo Boss party showed us the best way to wear animal prints on our feet.  And although Ashley Olsen spent a pretty penny on her oversized Louis Vuitton leopard print scarf, we think a silk animal print scarf is one item you don’t have to spend a small fortune on.  Click through to find out which animal accessories are worth investing in and which you can grab for less.

Scrimp, Spend, Splurge – The Cat Eye Sunglass

Celebrity,Scrimp Spend Splurge July 13, 2010 @ 8:01 am

Having worked as an assistant buyer for a major sunglass distributor, we have to admit we get pretty pumped whenever a new sunglass style sweeps the fashion world.  We fell in love with anything white back in 2007, had a field day with Ray-Ban’s rebirth last season and for 2010 we can’t get enough of the cat eye sunglass.  As spotted on the Spring/Summer 2010 runways of Sonia Rykiel and Jason Wu and on Olivia Palermo (she’s wearing Christian Dior’s ‘Zelli’ style), Kate Moss and Scarlett Johansson (in a pair of Tom Ford ‘Nikita’ shades), the cat eye sunglass has officially become the shade of the season.  Click through to find out where to buy ScarJo’s pair and where to shop for a pair when your cash is a little less dispensable.

Scrimp, Spend, Splurge – Alexa, Kate and Emma Do Denim Shorts for Summer 2010

Celebrity,Scrimp Spend Splurge July 6, 2010 @ 9:53 am

We don’t know about the rest of the world, but Toronto is suffering from a major heat wave!  The air is so hot and sticky, we’re practically seeing mirages.  Is anyone else mistaking the lake for the Mediterranean Sea?  Since we’d rather not dive into the murky waters of Lake Ontario, we’re battling the heat the only way we know how – with our wardrobe!  And since we can’t realistically run around the streets of TO in a bikini, we’re stepping into a pair of denim cutoffs for the duration of the heatwave.  They are the only type of shorts that are acceptable to wear at such a short length, meaning our legs earn maximum exposure to the barely there breeze.  Celebs like Alexa Chung, Emma Watson and Kate Bosworth have also bared all in denim shorts this season – Emma’s being so short her pockets are exposed!  You could cut up an old pair of jeans yourself to get the look but since that requires you to use your arm muscles when cutting which in turn could lead to even more sweating, we’re saving you the trouble (and the risk of heat stroke) by showing you top picks for denim cutoffs at every price point.
