Why is it that whenever we see folks on the street sporting denim-on-denim, we roll our eyes and mutter under our breath “Nice Canadian tuxedo!”, but when Chloe, Ralph Lauren and D&G do it for Spring 2010, we suddenly see the look in a whole new light? That’s the magic of designers and their stylists. Worn the right way, even a Canadian tuxedo can look amazing. The trick – break it up with a piece of brown leather and always make sure to wear two different shades of denim. Check out our picks below for the best affordable denim pieces of the season.
1) Chambray Shirt – $65 at Topshop
There is nothing more comfortable than a chambray shirt. It’s got the look of denim without the weight of it which means you can actually breathe in it during the summer. Topshop’s chambray shirt is definitely on our must-have list this season not only because it looks like a dead ringer for Chloe’s Spring 2010 chambray shirt, but because TOPSHOP NOW SHIPS TO CANADA!
2) Vintage Belt – $29.50 at Gap
If you are bold enough to pull off the denim on denim trend this season, be sure to break up the look with some leather, brown preferably. Gap’s simple brown leather belt is a great option because it already has that worn-in vintage look and it’s under $30!
3) Denim Roll Ups – $29.95 at H&M
This spring we’re trading in our cut-off denim shorts for ones with rolls. And because we’re not the most handy with a pair of scissors, we’re turning to H&M’s version. If you are the queen of DIY, you can make your own at home with last season’s jeans. Just be sure to leave enough length that you can roll them at least twice.
4) New Age Denim – $350 at Diane Von Furstenberg
Diane Von Furstenberg’s Piper evening bag in denim metallic leather is an upscale version of a denim handbag. Even though it’s made out of leather and not denim, we think it conveys the look better than a slouchy jean hobo bag ever could.
5) Jean Jacket – $59.50 at Delia’s
Growing up in the 80′s we lived in our jean jacket, complete with friendship pins and all. This spring we’re reviving our love for the jean jacket with Delia’s Melodie denim jacket.
