Not that we’ve been there but when we picture Tokyo, we picture chaos – hoards of screaming fans and dizzying flashes from digital cameras and giant LCD screens. Therefore we expected nothing less than chaos when H&M opened their Japanese flagship store in Tokyo with the launch of the Comme des Garçons Collection by Rei Kawakubo. The more than 2,000 Japanese shoppers, some who camped out for over 40 hours, calmly entered the store, high-fiving the PR girls as they walked in. They also calmly sifted through the racks of the collection, picking only one or two of the same piece and probably in their size. If you don’t believe us, watch the video above.
If only North Americans could be as civilized. Whenever H&M launches a diffusion line over here, women go mad! The racks are usually stripped bare within 5 minutes (only to be sold over eBay that same day) and girls literally claw at each other to grab the last piece left hanging. With the Comme de Garçons collection opening across North America this Thursday November 13th at 10am, H&M is putting a stop to this by imposing a limit upon shoppers. They are implementing a policy of only two items of each style per customer, so you can buy the entire collection twice, if so desired. Maybe we should take note of the Japanese shoppers conduct and make the H&M Comme de Garçons launch a more civilized and enjoyable shopping experience. No clawing allowed!
