We can’t think of any better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than to be part of Barbie’s 50th Birthday Bash! In stark contrast to the previous couture displays, the Barbie Runway Show presented a cacophony of bright pinks, glitter and dazzling outfits all throughout the 30 minute celebration. It was a fantasy come true for all women who attended Mattel’s Barbie Runway Show at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. Inside the Bryant Park tents, the iconic doll’s 50th anniversary was celebrated by featuring 50 life-size, yet strangely doll-like, one of a kind looks all inspired by the “always on the forefront of fabulous” Barbie.
Of course each outfit was designed by 50 of the top American designers, including Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger and Diane von Furstenberg. Starting off with a video montage of Barbie throughout the last 5 decades, the screen then opened up to show off, in chronological order, all the fashions, make-up, and hairstyles the doll has ever sported. As if the presentation wasn’t exciting enough hit tunes were being played reflecting each era as the Barbie models showed off their ensembles.
During a time where our economy has left many discouraged, the show provided a great distraction, and was a huge splash of fun and excitement. “Barbie has been an astronaut, been the president and been a rocker. And she’s done it all in heels, too, It’s a can-do attitude. That’s what we need these days” says Peter Som, one of the featured designers in the show. Barbie at 50 is still an inspiration to us all!
