The Anorak
London Fog crosses the Atlantic We've been in love with jolly old England since we spent the summer between 3rd and 4th year university pouring pints and serving fish and chips for a few measly pounds an hour in the northern part of the country. After spending 3 months in the English countryside, we learned 3 very important lessons: 1) There's no such thing as tipping in England (bad news for a waitress) 2) Never leave home without your wallet; you never know when you are going to run into a Topshop! 3) Always listen to the weatherman! Even when the sun is shining high in the sky, you are never more than a few hours away from a rain shower. With these 3 things in mind, we returned to London, England for a week in March, umbrella and wallet in hand. The first thing we noticed when stepping off the plane was not the lack of proper oral hygeine but the sheer volume of London hipsters decked out in the Anorak, this spring's hottest coat. Not only did we realize their practicality in a country where it rains 30% of the time, but we couldn't help but think how great these girls looked. Paired with brighly-coloured scarfs and sky-high heels, the Anorak has "been grasped by its collar and rejigged as a new, lightweight, trans-seasonal cover-up" as stated by the Daily Telegraph's style maven Hilary Alexander. Who are we to argue with dozens of London hipsters and Ms. Alexander? So we headed straight to Oxford Circus for a trip to Topshop (might we add, just in time for Kate Moss' latest spring delivery to hit the floors, but that's another story...) and picked up our very own Anorak. As we returned to a dryer continent a week later (and many shopping bags heavier), we couldn't believe how perfectly timed our purchase was. March's winter-filled days have given way to April showers, giving us the perfect excuse to wear our Anorak everday, even those days that are better suited for a pair of sunglasses than a pair of rainboots. What can we say? We love our Anorak! |
