Jean Genie
As citizens of Canada, we're quite familiar with the dreaded "Canadian Tuxedo", as in simultaneously wearing denim on top and on the bottom thereby forming one disastorous outfit. While we admit we've snickered in the past at the odd "tuxedo" walking down the street, we never gave the look a second thought until we say a photo last spring of Ashley Olsen in a light blue denim shirt with dark skinny jeans. We couldn't believe an Olsen had subscribed to the tuxedo theory! And then, last September while viewing the Spring 2009 runway collections, we couldn't get over how much denim on denim we saw parading down the runways of Balmain, Alexander Wang and Givenchy. What, we wondered, was happening in the world of fashion?
Even though we still don't have an answer (except that the spirit of Levi Strauss temporarily inhabited some of the world's most talented designers causing them to overload on denim) we do know that while we can't yet bring ourselves to embrace our Canadian fashion heritage, we can add little pieces of denim here and there this spring. From denim vests to vintage mens style denim shirts, we're sporting denim any way we can, just not one-on-one.
