Summer of Love
Redux...
40 years have come and gone since San Francisco's Summer of Love took over the nation in 1967. The cultural utopia it created far surpassed the summer, leaving a permanent stain on the realms of music, drugs, sexual freedom and of course fashion. Breaking free from the dominating mod fashions of the early 1960's came a hippie counterculture that quickly migrated into the mainstream.
The summer of 2007 is experiencing a Summer of Love revival: minus the drugs and sexual liberties, heavy on the fashion.
For those of you whose mother (or grandmother) didn't realize the importance of vintage and donated all of her 60's bohemian ware to the Salvation Army, retailers are overflowing with flower-child inspired pieces. From maxi dresses to wide-leg jeans, the best styles of the decade have returned, creating another hippie culture, consequently "counter" free. While 1967's Summer of Love was about more than just dancing barefoot in the park and listening to drugged-out musicians (think civil rights movement, the war in Veitnam), maybe it's introduction to a new generation will help inspire a movement of change. There seems to be a distinct parallel between the 2 summers and we don't just mean the fashion.
