Star Struck
Show off your star power
Every Halloween, we try to think outside the box when it comes to costume choices. We avoid those stores that sell the customary Halloween costume choices for women (slutty nurse/maid/policewoman) and instead hit up our local thrift stores in an attempt to channel our favorite icon of the moment. While we admit that in the past, our costume choices may not have been the wisest (we swear we've burnt all pictures of our Britney Spears costume circa 1999), we do have to give ourselves props for our last Halloween costume: Jem and the Holograms. By far our favorite cartoon of the 1980's, we idolized Jem for her bold choice in hair color and of course her signature star earrings. Didn't every girl growing up in the 80's want her own pair of star earrings to transform her from high-powered music manager by day to international rock superstar by night? Outrageous!

This spring, we're not the only ones expressing our love of stars. From star-printed jumpsuits at Chanel and chunky star necklaces at Yves Saint Laurent and Pucci, designers were clearly star struck. Some fashion editors have been quick to liken the trend to a sudden demonstration of patriotism (something about stars and stripes and yankee doodle dandy), but here at Stylehog, we believe the star trend is more of a throwback to a certain cartoon singing sensation of the 1980's. Is it so hard to picture a young Karl Lagerfeld perched in front of the tv, catching an episode of Jem and the Holograms?
