WHAT: Tradition is the epicenter of any major holiday so whenever December rolls around, we too like to indulge in a few traditions of our own. In addition to our tradition of endulging in too many glasses of champagne and racking up larger than normal credit card balances, one major tradition that we always make sure to uphold is a holiday performance of The Nutcracker (the only ballet we see all year). While we love the pointed ballet slippers and bears on roller skates, it's the costumes of Clara, Fritz and their aristocratic Russian family that really get us going. That's why we were thrilled to see that both John Galliano and Chanel brought some of that Russian folklore into their Fall and Pre-Fall 2009 collections. From rich scarlet reds, foxy fur trims and the most delicate and detailed embroidery we saw all fall, these collections brought a little bit of fairytale back to the runways.
WHO: Lily Allen, King Karl's muse and poster girl, has been seen all over the UK with her very own russian doll - Chanel's Matriochka (Russian doll) enamel bracelet bag from their Pre-Fall 2009 Paris-Moscow line while Cameron Diaz sported a Chanel jacket with a folklore twist from their Pre-Fall 2009 line while making an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
BEST BUY: Guerlain's new makeup collection for fall, Russian Beauty, is a line of warm, bohemian-inspired cosmetics inspired by Guerlain's muse and model Natalia Vodianova. Our best buy from the line of shimmering eye palettes, liquid blushes and rosy lipsticks is Le 2 de Guerlain Mascara, a new limited edition mascara in a plum shade that truly illuminates the eyes!!
TIP: Look for trim and embellishments with detailed embroidery in a traditional folky style to instantly transport yourself and your wardrobe to imperial Russia.
