Fold it, Pleat it
Origami unfolds on the runway this fall (minus the papercuts)
We've always wondered how one could fold a piece of paper 46 times and end up with a perfectly constructed paper crane, all without the use of scissors or Scotch Tape. Apparently, we weren't the only curious ones. The ancient Japanese art of origami was the inspiration behind many a pleat, tuck and fold this season. Before the days of anime and karaoke the Japanese tradition of paper folding was a cultural pastime, one replicated this fall on the runways of fall 2007. Designers used intricate sewing techniques to create conceptual masterpieces worthy of haute couture runways (and the halls of the Met). While art is no stranger to the realm of fashion, this season's focus on origami folds and pleats is the perfect fusion of art and fashion. Always looking to add a little culture to our wardrobes, we consider these origami-influenced fashions to be our way of collecting art on an Ikea budget.
