The Greta Constantine’s Fall 2009 collection entitled ‘Women’ set out to showcase all the different aspects of being a woman. It reminded us of a high school guidance class exercise where we listed all of the words we felt described us, all starting with “I am…”. It goes something like this: “I am strong. I am a daughter. I am creative.” And the list goes on. The creative forces behind Greta Constantine, Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong, showed us just how multi-faceted women are, as well as themselves as fashion designers. Facing a bout of criticism regarding their seemingly one-note Spring 2009 collection of beautifully draped jersey Grecian gowns, the Fall collection gave us lots of options and variation, including pants, jackets, mini skirts, form fitting dresses and of course the draped jersey gown but this season layered under sheer black veils. Models strutted through the maze of fashion industry insiders at The Courthouse on Friday night, a few days before the official start of Toronto LG Fashion Week, celebrating the many facets of being “woman”. They were strong in motorcycle pants and pleather gloves, a goddess in a long gold leopard print flowing Grecian gown, sexy in expertly draped one-sleeved mini dresses and exotic in cropped kimono jackets and silver harem pants.
Just when we thought the show was over, models strutted out in corseted tops constructed out of seat belts as a grand finale. The intricate construction of this material created tops that looked like armour, exoskeletons, origami, and even Edwardian bustles. The diverse collection not only reflected the dynamic being that is a woman but proved that Greta Constantine is just as multi-faceted. Kirk and Stephen should be saying to themselves: “I am amazing”.
