Between exaggerated shoulders, metallic party dresses, blinding brights, hair as high as the ceiling and David Bowiesque makeup, one would get the impression she stepped into a Cyndi Lauper music video instead of a Marc Jacobs’ show. But in an effort to lighten up the fashion scene while forcing us to temporarily forget words like “recession”, “economic downturn” and “bailout”, Marc Jacobs put the fun back into fashion at his Fall 2009 collection on Monday.
Jacobs, whose collection is about the “good old days in New York…when getting dressed up was such a joy” had us thinking long and hard about the art of dressing. Fashion is fun and fun is fashion but somewhere in the last 6 months or so, the entertainment part of fashion simply disappeared. Instead we started thinking about fashion in terms of our stock portfolio: safe, long-term and conservative. And where’s the fun in that? This year, we’re taking a note out of Marc Jacobs’ book and remembering the joy, frivolity and pure shock value that comes with getting dressed. Does that mean you’ll see us in a velvet bustier top come fall? Probably not, but at least we’ll know that Marc would approve if we did.
