Last spring it was stripes and this fall in keeping with the geometry trend, it’s all about the polka dots! We spotted (pun intended) an army of polka dot clad models hitting the Fall/Winter 2011 runways starting at Marc Jacobs, the official king of dots for the season, Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana, L.A.M.B. and even at Stella McCartney. Little spots or big, black white or blue, polka dots have already made their way from the runway to the red carpet. Mila Kunis wowed London with a navy and white polka dot Oscar de la Renta while Olivia Palermo’s asymmetrical Bensoni spotted number was definitely a party in the front and all business in the back. Even fashion writer Stephanie LaCava stepped out in a polka dot Z Spoke by Zac Posen pajama style blouse (that we love!) in New York City. Back to school shopping was always our favourite time of year. We’d make a shopping list weeks in advance and cross our fingers that our list would meet our mother’s approval. Items were often vetoed for being too short, too trendy or alas, too expensive. However if we knew then what we know now, we have a feeling that we could have scooped up every item on that list! First of all, we would have recommended to our well-meaning mother that we hit up Dixie Outlet Mall as the source for all our back to school needs. With over 130 brand name outlets (think Tommy Hilfiger Outlet, Nine West Shoe Studio, Guess Outlet and Winners) at up to 70% off, we would have surely found a new wardrobe that met both our needs and our mothers. Secondly, we would have educated our mother on how to get the most bang for her buck by showing her the many different ways we could wear the same item, i.e. taking one favourite item and wearing it two different ways, a trick we’ve demonstrated in the photos above. But since our school days are long behind us, we thought it would be a great idea to share our back to school styling tips with you, all found while treasure hunting at Dixie Outlet Mall (and don’t forget to visit Dixie’s Facebook page to enter their back to school contest!).

Every season without fail one colour seems to dominate the runways and is officially named the shade of the moment. How do designers collectively know which shade to dye their textiles in? We think its a combination of Pantone swatches and ESP but either way, designers focused on not one but two signature shades this season: red had its moment in the sun on the Fall/Winter 2011 runways at Marchesa and Michael Kors while cobalt blue, this week’s hot pick, made a name for itself on Diane von Furstenberg, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Thakoon’s catwalks. And even though we’re only midway through August the stores are already overflowing with the shade. Whether you go head to toe cobalt as seen at DVF or with just a hint of the shade in your accessories (we’re obsessed with the Kors Michael Kors calf-hair pumps as seen above), make sure you add a hint of fall’s other favorite colour, red, on your lips!

We’ve been sporting our flat Bass penny loafers (with the penny inserted of course!) for several seasons now and we have yet to tire of them. In fact, we love them so much we’ve decided to look for a high heel version of the loafer as seen on the Fall/Winter 2011 runways at Alexander Wang, Celine and YSL. What originally started as a trend at Prada last fall, the high heel loafer (or the high heel moccasin as they call them in the UK) has made a name for itself as this season’s shoe of choice. Whether with tassels or without, chunky heel or stiletto, we can’t wait to trade in our flat loafers for a pair with a 4″ heel!
