Just like everybody else out there, we too have those moments in the morning when we stand paralyzed in front of our closet wondering what on earth we are going to wear that day. The decision becomes even harder when the city feels like the inside of an oven, like it did during last week’s heat wave. When the mercury reaches that high, we’d much rather run around naked than let any sort of fabric touch our skin but since we don’t live in the Garden of Eden and clothing is not optional, we try to stick to the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) style of dressing. First we stick to something white since there is no other colour better than white in the heat. Next we stick to lightweight, natural fabrics like cottons and silks that allow skin to breathe. The best article of clothing that falls into both those categories is the classic white button down shirt, already a staple in our wardrobe. Our fascination with the classic white shirt has reached new heights as of late, not just because of how helpful it is when combating the heat wave (when strapless or spaghetti straps are not allowed at the office) but also because quite a few celebs have been spotted this summer keeping cool in a classic white shirt. Olivia Palermo hit the red carpet at the Friends With Benefits premiere in NYC last week in a super sheer white shirt with double front pockets while Clemence Poesy showed off her chic French style in a slightly oversize flat front white blouse. Ashley Olsen also partook in the trend when she was seen walking her dog sporting a more structured version of the white shirt. While Olivia and Clemence’s blouses were slightly more billowy, all three ladies wore the white shirt the same way – loose and tucked in with the sleeves casually rolled up. Talk about simple!

Recently, on a very fashion-forward blog, we read an article about what to wear for a job interview. Since we were reading the article on a style blog we assumed the author would encourage candidates to show off their personality through their wardrobes (with a hint of restraint of course). Instead the author stressed the importance of wearing black to an interview. We were quite surprised and didn’t necessarily agree (in the fashion world wearing black is the equivalent of turning off your brain – unless you’re Grace Coddington of course) until we thought that black can be interesting if you know how to wear it. And the way to wear it moving into fall is mixed with white in geometric shapes as seen at RAD by Rad Hourani and Yves Saint Laurent. Clean lines, sharp contrasts and solid blocks of basic black and white are very interview-friendly but still show off a hint of style. How else are you going to stand out from that stack of resumes?

Some people can’t leave home without a smudge of lipstick or a swipe of mascara. We can’t leave home without something shiny on our wrist. This summer our bling of choice (when we’re not sporting friendship bracelets of course) is a chunky gold cuff. A bold gold cuff wrapped snugly around our wrist is the perfect piece of arm candy but sometimes, just sometimes, when we’re feeling extra bold we’ll wrap one cuff around each wrist for that Wonder Woman look. But how do we afford to go double duty on the wrist action? We search for statement-making bracelets at budget-friendly prices, like under $100.

As prepsters at heart, we go gaga over anything with a collar. So when we spotted certain celebs sporting contrasting collars à la Cher and Dionne circa 1995 (hello, Clueless anyone?), we knew this was one trend we had to get back into. Alexa Chung has long been a fan of the collar, whether a rounded peter pan or a classic pointed, and was recently spotted shopping in NYC sporting her signature adornment. Emma Watson wowed fans on the Today show last week in a baby blue Prada pleated dress with a sharp white collar and cuffs. Actress and L’Oreal ambassador Sonam Kapoor also went for a contrasting collar when she hit the red carpet in a creamy silk blouse with an embellished peter pan collar from The Row’s Pre-Fall 2011 collection. And proving that this trend has staying power, the house of Louis Vuitton sent models clad in crisp white collars down their Fall 2011 runways. Our inner preppy is crying with joy!
