We’ve always wished we were handier in the DIY department but we’re helpless with a needle and a thread or anything that involves hand-eye coordination. Even as kids when our besties were passing out homemade friendship bracelets like candy, we had to recipricate with store -bought versions purchased from our tiny allowance. Fast forward twenty years and friendship bracelets are making their rounds again, this time minus the actual friendship. Stylish ladies like Fearne Cotton, Lauren Conrad and Giovanna Battaglia are buying them for themselves and layering them on five at a time. And while super inspiring DIY blogs like Honestly…WTF are offering up step-by-step instructions on how to make your own multicolored friendship bracelets, we think we’ll take the easy route and use our much bigger allowance to once again buy the store-bought versions.

Besides tasting every national delicacy until our stomach bursts and drinking every local wine in sight, our favourite part about traveling is hitting the local shops and hunting for souvenirs to bring back for our friends, family and of course for ourself! When visiting Beijing a few summers ago, we, like most tourists in China, headed straight to the silk market to rummage for scarves, robes and anything silky, cheap and colourful we could get our hands on. We departed with a gorgeous purple silk robe in hand with the intention of one day wearing it as a dress. We haven’t been bold enough to actually try the robe out in real life – until now. Designers like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Reed Krakoff, Haider Ackermann and Dries Van Noten headed to the East for Spring/Summer 2011 and returned with oriental-inspired designers worthy of a role in Memoirs of a Geisha. From lace fans at Louis Vuitton and metallic obi belts at Gucci, we’re heading to the Orient through our wardrobe this season which in reality is a much cheaper way to travel!

There’s no such thing as a sure bet, but in fashion there are a few things you can definitely count on seeing every season. Lanvin will do draping, Jil Sander will do minimalist, Bottega Veneta will do basket weaves and someone will do nautical. For Spring/Summer 2011, that someone was Marc by Marc Jacobs. Putting his own spin on the nautical look for summer, MJ switched out the red and went with a deep orange instead, a change we quite appreciated! This season, we’re taking a page out of Marc Jacob’s book and opting to pair our navy with something citrusy as well. After all, who are we to argue with a master?

Accessorizing your beachwear is a tricky thing to master. Between sandals, shades, cover ups, straw hats and a strong enough SPF, a girl really has to plan to get her look just right. And then of course comes the beach bag. It has to be big enough to fit your must-have beach gear (sunscreen, rag mags, water, iPod, your kitchen sink…) but cute enough to match your favorite bikini. We went shopping and spotted six hot summer beach bags for under $300, perfect for a day at the beach OR for a day on the streets. After all, if you’re going to drop some serious dough on a bag, you want to be sure you can wear it off the sand as well!
